An Elliot Lake resident is facing impaired driving charges.

Ontario Provincial Police say officers on patrol pulled over a grey pickup truck on Chalmers Crescent at around 12:15 a.m. Sunday morning.

“Open cans of alcohol were observed inside the vehicle and three drug bongs were also later located,” allege OPP in a news release.

“In addition, approximately 4 grams of suspected psilocybin was in the driver's possession.”

Jo-Ann Belmore, 52, is scheduled to appear in court on May 9 to face the following charges:

  • Operation while impaired - Alcohol and Drugs
  • Possession of a Schedule III Substance
  • Driving a motor vehicle with open container of liquor

None of the allegations have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.

“The OPP would like to remind the motoring public to drive sober; this includes drug consumption as well,” said police in a news release. “Impairment by drugs is a crime under the Criminal Code and drivers are subject to the same penalties as those who are charged with driving while impaired by alcohol.”

“A charge of impairment by drugs involves all drugs, be it prescription, over-the-counter and those that are illegal.”

Anyone who suspects an impaired driver is asked to call 911 or contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
