Early morning Manitoulin traffic stop leads to impaired driving arrest

One person has been arrested and charged following a traffic stop on Highway 6 in Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands.

On Nov. 30, 2023 shortly after 3 a.m., members of the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting general patrol along Highway 6 when a vehicle was observed travelling at varying speeds.

A traffic stop was conducted and upon speaking with the driver, police were able to determine that the driver was impaired. The driver was subsequently arrested and transported back to the OPP detachment for further testing.

As a result of the investigation, Donovan Taibossigai, 37 years old from Wikwemikong Unceded Territory, has been charged with:
    •    Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
    •    Driving while under suspension
    •    Drive motor vehicle - no licence
    •    Fail to surrender permit for motor vehicle

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Gore Bay on Jan. 9, 2024.

The driver was issued a 90-day administrative driver's licence suspension, and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
