Driver facing slew of charges following Highway 6 traffic complaint

The driver is charged with failing to identify themselves as well as a drug possession charge

One person has been arrested and charged with multiple offences following a traffic complaint.

On Dec. 2, 2023, shortly after 7 p.m., the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received numerous traffic complaints regarding a vehicle traveling northbound on Highway 6.

Police located the vehicle parked on Centre Street in Espanola and upon speaking with the driver, the driver refused to identify themself. Through further investigation, police were able to properly identify the driver who was subsequently arrested.

As a result of the investigation, Ryan Machell, 31 years old from Keswick has been charged with:

  • failure to comply with release order - other than to attend court
  • possession of a schedule I substance - opioid (other than heroin)
  • fail to identify self
  • use plate not authorized for vehicle
  • obstruct plate
  • operate unsafe vehicle

The accused was held in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sudbury on Dec. 14, 2023.
