Driver faces impaired, drug charges following Espanola R.I.D.E. check

On Dec. 13, 2019, officers from the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police were conducting Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere checks on Second Avenue in the Town of Espanola, Ont.

At approximately 10:10 p.m., a vehicle entered the spot check and the officers spoke with the driver. It was determined that the driver had been consuming alcohol.

As a result, Kyle Taylor, 33 years old from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., has been charged with: 

  •  Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 Plus), contrary to section 320.14(1)(b) of the Criminal Code (CC),
  •  Possession of a schedule I substance - methamphetamine contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA),
  •  Driving motor vehicle with open container of liquor contrary to section 32(1) of the Liquor Licence Act (LLA), and
  •  Drive while under suspension (two counts) contrary to section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA).

The accused was issued a 90-day automatic drivers licence suspension (ADLS), and the vehicle was impounded for seven days. The driver is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola, Ont. on Jan. 6, 2020.
