Driver charged with impaired during Espanola RIDE check

ESPANOLA - On Nov. 21, 2021, members of the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) program on Highway 6 in Espanola.

A vehicle was stopped and the driver was showing signs of impairment. An approved screening device (ASD) was administered which resulted in a fail. The driver was subsequently arrested and taken to the Espanola Detachment for further testing.

As a result, Alex Nahwegabhow, 29 years old from Whitefish River First Nation, was charged with operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), contrary to section 320.14(1)(b) of the Criminal Code. An administrative driver's license suspension (ADLS) was issued and the vehicle was towed and impounded.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on Jan. 10, 2022.
