Driver charged with impaired after rollover in St. Joseph's Township

A weekend crash in St. Joseph's Township has led to charges against a driver from Stoney Creek.

Around 9:30 p.m. on Sept. 3, officers with the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police responded to a a crash on Richard's Street in St. Joseph's Township.

Police say a small green car was travelling southbound and lost control, left the roadway and rolled onto its roof. 

Officers responded to the scene. Although the vehicle sustained moderate damage, the driver was not injured.

Police say responding officers could detect a strong odour of alcohol on the driver's breath, and that the driver was exhibiting signs of impairment.

The driver was arrested and the vehicle was impounded.

Nicholas Laufman, 27, of Stoney Creek is charged with:

  • operation while Impaired - alcohol and drugs
  • operation while Impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • owner operate motor vehicle on a highway - no insurance
  • having care and control of a motor vehicle while liquor readily available (two counts)

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on Oct. 5, 2023.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Laufman is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
