Driver charged with impaired after nearly striking pedestrians, dog: OPP

On May 6, 2021 shortly after 8:40 p.m., members from the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a traffic complaint where a small pickup truck was unable to maintain its own lane and almost struck two pedestrians walking a dog, was all over the road and travelling at high rates of speed on Taylor Boulevard, Eston Drive North and Pearson Drive in the City of Elliot Lake.

At 8:43 p.m., police located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop at the bottom of Pearson Drive just past the dog park. Further investigation determined the driver had consumed suspected controlled substances. The driver was arrested and transported to Espanola OPP Detachment to conduct further testing.

As a result, Renate Newton, 80 years of age from Elliot Lake, was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs, contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on Aug 3, 2021. The driver was issued a 90-day administration driver's licence suspension (ADLS) and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

This incident marks the 13th, driver charged under the criminal impaired driving laws in the East Algoma Detachment area in 2021.
