A motorist has been charged with impaired driving after an SUV got stuck and was spinning its wheels before a call to the local OPP from a member of the public.

At around 7:40 p.m. Friday, the East Algoma OPP say they received a call about a possible impaired driver on Spruce Avenue in Elliot Lake.

"The complainant reported the vehicle got stuck and was spinning the tires attempting to get out," the OPP said in a news release.

Police attended the area and say they located the white SUV a short time later at the Spruce Beach parking lot.

The driver exhibited signs of impairment and there were open beer cans in the passenger side area, according to police.

The driver was arrested and the vehicle was towed and impounded.

Belinda Leaman, 48, of Elliot Lake was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on Sept. 19.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
