Driver charged after police find suspected amphetamine pills during vehicle search

BLIND RIVER - On August 15, 2020, members from the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on patrol duties in the Town of Blind River.

At approximately 12:50 p.m., police observed a vehicle with the driver not wearing a seatbelt near the intersection of Murray Street and Huron Avenue. The driver attempted to evade police and parked the vehicle at an address on Woodward Avenue. The driver had fled on foot and was located on Huron Avenue.

The vehicle was searched and a quantity of suspected amphetamine pills were located.

As a result of the investigation, Shawn Turcotte, 35 years of age from Blind River, was charged with:
    •    Operate a motor vehicle without insurance, contrary to section2(1)(a) of the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act;
    •    Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the purpose of trafficking - other drug, contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act;
    •    Fail to stop for police, contrary to section 216(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA);
    •    Two counts of use plate not authorized for vehicle, contrary to section 12(1)(d) of the HTA; and with
    •    Driver - fail to properly wear seatbelt, contrary to section 106(2) of the HTA.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on Oct. 1, 2020.
