Driver caught with spike belt after fleeing police: OPP

The 39-year-old faces multiple charges as a result

On July 4, 2021, shortly after 5 p.m., members from the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were advised by members of Chapleau OPP that they had a vehicle fail to stop and was now southbound on Highway 129. The vehicle was involved in a motor vehicle collision in the Town of Chapleau and had left the scene.  

East Algoma (Elliot Lake) OPP located the vehicle on Black Creek Road north of Elliot Lake. A spike belt was deployed successfully and the driver was subsequently arrested.  

As a result, Shawn Gravelle, 39 years-of-age from Elliot Lake was charged with: 

  • Dangerous operation, contrary to section 320.13(1) of the Criminal Code (CC) 
  • Flight from peace officer, contrary to section 320.17 of the CC 
  • Failure or refusal to comply with Demand contrary to section 320.15(1) of the CC 
  • Resist peace officer, contrary to section 129(a) of the CC    

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario court of Justice in Elliot Lake on Sept. 7, 2021.
