Dispute over noisy television leads to weapons charges

On June 27, 2021 shortly after 11:30 p.m., members from the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a weapons call at an apartment complex on Washington Crescent in the City of Elliot Lake.

Investigation determined the complainant attended the apartment next door to ask the neighbour to turn the television down. Once permission was granted to enter the apartment [it is alleged that] the neighbour then shot the complainant in the arm with an air gun.

Police arrived on scene a short time later. Officers made an arrest and seized the air gun. The complainant was transported to the local hospital via Algoma District Paramedic Services with non life-threatening injuries.

As a result, Gary Basler, 62 years of age from Elliot Lake, was charged with:

  • Assault with a weapon, contrary to section 267(a) of the Criminal Code (CC)
  • Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose, contrary to section 88 of the CC

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on Aug. 3, 2021.
