Death of missing Wikwemikong man not deemed suspicious: police

On Jan. 16, 2024, the Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service received a report of a missing person from a residence in the main village area of the Wikwemikong Unceded Territory.

The complainant reported that his 33-year-old son had departed to the local store, had not returned home, and was not dressed appropriately for the weather.

The Wikwemikong Police began a search of the main village area and local establishments in which the person had frequented with negative results.

Police continued to search the main village area and requested the assistance of the Ontario Provincial Police ERT team, Canine Unit and the OPP helicopter. An extensive search was begun of the Wikwemikong area.

The community members of Wikwemikong also volunteered to assist in the search for the missing person and searched extensively within the main village and outskirts of the main village area.

Sadly, on Friday, Jan. 19, the body of the male person was located in a wooded area outside the main village.

A post-mortem has been scheduled to take place this week. The incident is not deemed suspicious at this time and the Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service continue to investigate.

The Wikwemikong Tribal Police would like to thank all the volunteers who came out to assist in the search.

The matter is still under investigation.
