Cyclist suffers injuries in Mississauga FN collision

A 56-year-old pickup driver from Blind River faces multiple charges after police say she left the scene

A cyclist suffered non life-threatening injuries after being struck by a pickup truck in Mississauga First Nation on July 17, 2022.

MISSISSAUGA FIRST NATION  — On July 17, 2022, shortly after 9:45 p.m., members from the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a motor vehicle collision involving a white pickup truck and a bicycle on Village Road in the community of Mississauga First Nation.

Investigation determined the driver was travelling northbound on Village Road when the pickup truck struck a cyclist and then fled the scene. The victim was taken to local hospital via Algoma District Paramedic Services and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

As a result, Lisa Maitland, 56 years-of-age from Blind River was arrested and charged with:

  • Dangerous Operation Causing Bodily Harm, contrary to section 320.13(2) of the Criminal Code (CC)
  • Failure to Stop After Accident, contrary to section 320.16(1) of the CC
  • Obstruct Peace Officer, contrary to section 129(a) of the CC
  • Driving While Under Suspension, contrary to section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA)

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on Sept. 1, 2022.
