Arrests made in armed robbery investigation

On Friday, Nov. 15, 2019 at approximately 11:30 a.m., members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) arrested two persons at a residence on Beckett Boulevard in the City Elliot Lake, Ont.

On Nov. 12, 2019, a robbery occurred at a convenience store on Hillside Drive North in Elliot Lake. [It is alleged that] a suspect had entered the store, brandished two knives, held a staff member against their will, and then stole cash from the till. A second person was also involved.  

Kurtis Letts, 29 years of age, of no fixed address, was charged with:

  • Robbery with a weapon, contrary to section 344(1)(b) of the Criminal Code (CC),
  • Uttering threats - cause death or bodily harm, contrary to section 264.1(1)(a), of the CC,
  • Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose, contrary to section 88 of the CC,
  • Fail to comply with probation order (four counts), contrary to section 733.1(1) of the CC.

Shana Shepherdson, 27 years of age, of Elliot Lake, Ont. was charged with:

  • Accessory after the fact to commit indictable offence, contrary to section 463(b) of the CC.

Both accused persons were scheduled to attend the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in Blind River, Ont. on Nov. 16, 2019.
