Confrontation leads to robbery, assault charges

Police say the incident happened when a person showed up at the residence of an acquaintance and asked to spend the night, but was denied

On Nov. 16, 2021, at approximately 5 p.m., members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a robbery at an apartment on Beckett Boulevard in Elliot Lake.

The complainant reported that on the evening of Nov. 15, an acquaintance attended the residence who wanted to stay the night. The complainant refused entry which upset the acquaintance who then assaulted the complainant. The complainant was knocked unconscious and when awoken, there was groceries missing, jewellery missing, and a missing wallet containing cash and cards.

Police later located the acquaintance in a shed near Washington Crescent and Ottawa Avenue who was subsequently arrested.

Jan Rene (JR) Wilen, 48 years old of no fixed address, was charged with:

  • Robbery with theft, contrary to section 344(1)(b) of the Criminal Code (CC)
  • Assault causing bodily harm, contrary to section 267(b) of the CC
  • Unlawfully in dwelling house, contrary to section 349(1) of the CC
  • Fail to comply with probation order (two counts), contrary to section 733.1(1) of the CC

The accused was scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in Blind River on Nov. 17, 2021.
