Concerned citizen call leads to impaired charge in Blind River

Police say they were alerted to a 28-year-old's possible impairment by a concerned caller

BLIND RIVER — On July 16, 2022, shortly after 9 p.m., members of the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial police (OPP) were dispatched to a possible impaired driver leaving a venue in Elliot Lake, driving southbound on Hwy 108 heading towards Sault Ste Marie.

Shortly after 10 p.m., police observed the vehicle on Causley Street in the Town of Blind River and initiated a traffic stop. After speaking with the driver, the officer determined that alcohol had been consumed. The driver was arrested and transported to the Blind River detachment where further testing was conducted.

As a result, Gage Franz, 28 years-of-age from the Township of Laird was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - Blood alcohol concentration (80 plus) contrary to Section 320.14(1)(b) of the Criminal Code (CC)

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Eliot Lake on Aug. 4, 2022.

The driver was issued a 90-day Administration Drivers Licence Suspension and the car was impounded for seven days
