Commercial vehicle driver accused of assaulting police, impaired driving near Webbwood

WEBBWOOD - On March 1, 2022 at approximately 2:33 p.m., the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a traffic complaint of a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) that was driving in an erratic manner on Highway 17 in Baldwin Township.

Police located the CMV and conducted a traffic stop. A roadside screening device was administered which resulted a fail. The individual was very uncooperative with police and became assaultive and resistive towards officers as they were making the arrest.

Ian Hope, 38 years old from Quispamsis, N.B., was charged with:
    •    Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs, contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC)
    •    Resist peace officer (two counts), contrary to section 129(a) of the CC
    •    Assault a peace officer (two counts), contrary to section 270(1)(a) of the CC
    •    Mischief - destroys or damages property, contrary to section 430(1)(a) of the CC
    •    Assault, contrary to section 266 of the CC

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on April 4, 2022.
