Charges laid after stolen truck jackknifes on Webbwood tracks

Stolen tractor-trailer and snowmobiles were all recovered after the truck was tracked by GPS to the site where it was jackknifed

A stolen transport truck located blocking the train tracks in Sabels-Spanish Rivers Township has resulted in theft and mischief charges.

On April 21, 2023, shortly after 7 a.m., the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a theft in progress from a business located on Carlalbert Street.

The complainant reported a tractor-trailer had been stolen and employees were tracking it by GPS. Two snowmobiles and a flatbed trailer had also been stolen, but they were recovered a few kilometres away on Birch Lake Road. The gates to the business had also been damaged.

Police located the tractor-trailer down a side trail and jackknifed across the train tracks in Webbwood. The driver was unsuccessfully attempting to move the vehicle. The person was arrested at the scene. Train traffic was halted while the company removed the vehicle from the tracks.  

Jonathon Bois, 23 years old, from Espanola, was arrested and charged with:

  • theft over $5,000 of a motor vehicle - two counts
  • theft over $5,000 - three counts
  • theft under $5,000
  • possession of property obtained by crime - two counts
  • mischief, destroys or damages property - three counts
  • driving while under suspension

The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice Virtual Bail Court in Sudbury on April 21, 2023, and was remanded into custody.
