Charges laid after domestic disturbance in Serpent River First Nation

Police say the couple had consumed alcohol and an argument ensued

SERPENT RIVER FIRST NATION - On June 12, 2021, approximately 4 a.m., members from the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a domestic disturbance in the community of Serpent River First Nation.

Investigation determined a couple had consumed alcohol and an argument ensued. One of the parties exited the home and the door was locked. In retaliation, the accused smashed a picture window from outside the residence and left the area. Two or three days prior there was a physical altercation where the victim was pushed off a chair, was physically assaulted with a rubber mallet and was threatened.

As a result, a 24 years old [person] from Serpent River First Nation was arrested on the evening of June 13, 2021, and charged with:

  • Assault with a weapon, contrary to section 267(a) of the Criminal Code (CC)
  • Possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose, contrary to section 88 of the CC
  • Mischief under $5,000, contrary to section 430(4) of the CC
  • Uttering threats - cause death or bodily harm - spousal, contrary to section 264.1(1)(a) of the CC.

The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice Video Bail in Blind River on June 14, 2021, and was remanded into custody.
