A 19-year-old from Bruce Mines has been charged after a report of a suspicious vehicle at a gas station in Thessalon on Thursday afternoon.

Shortly after 4 p.m., officers with the East Algoma detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police responded to the station on Riverside Drive.

Police located the vehicle in the parking lot shortly after arriving and spoke with the driver.

Police say the officers had grounds to believe the driver was impaired and arrested them.

The driver was then taken to the Sault Ste. Marie OPP detachment for further testing.

As a result, Caleb Phillips was charged with:

  • operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
  • operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

Additionally, the driver was issued a 90-day licence suspension and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

The accused is scheduled to appear in court in Elliot Lake on Oct. 5, 2023.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Phillips is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
