Bonfire dispute leads to assault, mischief charges for neighbours in Huron Shores

Police say complainant threw rocks at firefighters and their vehicles; second accused got into a physical altercation with complainant and spouse

MUNICIPALITY OF HURON SHORES – On July 2, 2021, shortly after 10 p.m., members from the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to an on-going neighbour dispute at a residence on Dumond Road in the Municipality of Huron Shores (west of Thessalon).  

Investigation determined the complainant had contacted the local fire department to report a neighbour had a bonfire. Members of the fire department attended the bonfire and it was determined to be within the fire code. The complainant was unhappy with outcome and began throwing rocks at the fire fighters and their vehicles.   

Shortly after, the neighbour's spouse attended the complainant's property and an argument ensued between the two spouses and escalated to a physical altercation between the three parties.  

As a result, Artur Mroczkowski, 58 years-of-age from the Municipality of Huron Shores, was charged with:           

  • Assault contrary to section 266 of the Criminal Code (CC)           
  • Assault with a Weapon, contrary to section 267(a) of the CC          
  • Mischief Under $5000, contrary to section 430(4) of the CC           
  • Assault Peace Officer, contrary to section 270(1)(a) of the CC  

The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice Video Bail in Blind River on July 3, 2021.  

In addition, Colleen Coulter, 53 years-of-age from the Municipality of Huron Shores was charged with:

  • Assault, contrary to section 266 of the CC. 

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on Sept. 2, 2021.
