Boater faces impaired charges north of Thessalon

A Desbarats resident faces impaired operation charges after police say they attended a campsite located north of Thessalon by boat on Saturday evening.

The individual staying at the campsite on Wakomata Lake called East Algoma OPP to have the accused removed.

Full text of the OPP news release regarding this incident follows:

On Aug. 19, 2023 shortly after 11:30 p.m., members from the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to unwanted person complaint on Wakomata Lake in Casson Township (north of Thessalon off Highway 129).

Investigation determined an [alleged] intoxicated boater pulled up on shore and attended the complainant's campsite and they wanted the person removed. Police attended the campsite and while speaking to the boat operator officers determined alcohol had been consumed and an arrest was made. The accused was transported to Thessalon detachment for further testing.
 
As a result, Shaun Hutchinson, 47 years of age from Desbarats, was charged with:
    •    Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
    •    Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice Elliot Lake on Oct. 5, 2023.
