Blind River traffic stop leads to drug, weapons charges

Officers seized a loaded handgun and $46,000 worth of suspected cocaine

BLIND RIVER - On Oct. 28, 2023, members from the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on patrol duties on Causley Street in the Town of Blind River.

Shortly after 2:30 p.m., a traffic stop was conducted after being alerted by the automatic licence plate reader (ALPR) that the registered owner was a suspended driver. The driver provided officers with a false name and was arrested. The vehicle was searched, and police located a loaded handgun along, tobacco products, a small amount of marijuana, and over 400 grams of suspected cocaine (estimated street value over $46,000).

As a result of the investigation, Ross Hagan, 26 years of age from Etobicoke, was charged with:
    •    Transport Firearm, Weapon, Prohibited Device or Ammunition in a Careless Manner
    •    Unauthorized Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Firearm
    •    Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession of Firearm
    •    Possession of a Prohibited Device or Ammunition
    •    Occupant of Motor Vehicle Knowing There was Prohibited or Restricted Weapon
    •    Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Firearm
    •    Obstruct Peace Officer
    •    Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking - Cocaine
    •    Breach of Recognizance (two counts)

The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice Video Bail Court in Blind River on Oct. 29, 2023, and was remanded into custody.
