Blind River driver faces drug, weapons charges following Sudbury traffic stop (3 photos)

Officers seized approximately $31,000 worth of suspected cocaine and fentanyl

SUDBURY - On Nov. 30, 2021, members from the Provincial Operational Intelligence Bureau (POIB) along with Sudbury Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau (OCEB) of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), conducted a traffic stop on Paris Street in the City of Greater Sudbury.

As a result of the investigation, it was determined that the driver was in possession of a prohibited weapon with prohibited ammunition and drugs suspected to be cocaine and fentanyl. The value of the drugs seized is believed to be approximately $31,000.

Shawn Ranoo, 24 years of age from Blind River, was arrested and charged with:
    •    possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - cocaine, contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs Substance Act (CDSA)
    •    possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - opioid (other than heroin), contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA
    •    unauthorized possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm, contrary to section 91(1) of the Criminal Code (CC)
    •    possession of a prohibited device or ammunition, contrary to section 92(2) of the CC
    •    transport firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition in a careless manner, contrary to section 86(1) of the CC (two counts)
    •    occupant of motor vehicle knowing there was firearm, contrary to section 94 of the CC
    •    possession of loaded prohibited or restricted firearm, contrary to section 95(a) of the CC
    •    knowledge of unauthorized possession of firearm, contrary to section 92(1) of the CC
    •    possession of firearm or ammunition contrary to Prohibition Order, contrary to section 117.01(1) of the CC

The accused was held in custody for bail court on Dec. 1, 2021 and remanded back into custody, returning to the Ontario Court of Justice in Sudbury on Dec. 10, 2021.
