ATV driver charged after hitting police vehicle

SABLES-SPANISH RIVERS TOWNSHIP - On Dec. 25, 2022 at approximately 9 p.m., members of the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were dealing with an abandoned vehicle on Young Street in Sables-Spanish Rivers Township.

Police observed a side-by-side travelling at a high rate of speed and fail to stop for a stop sign. Police attempted to stop the vehicle. The driver refused to stop for police, colliding with the front end of a police vehicle causing damage and fleeing the scene. The driver was later located and arrested.

Rilley Harris, 26 years old from Sables-Spanish Rivers Township, was charged with:
    •    Dangerous operation of motor vehicle contrary to section 320.13(1) of the Criminal Code (CC)
    •    Flight from peace officer contrary to section 320.17 CC
    •    Drive motor vehicle - no licence contrary to section 32(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA)
    •    Fail to remain contrary to section 200(1)(a) HTA
    •    Drive motor vehicle - perform stunt contrary to section 172(1) HTA
    •    Disobey stop sign - fail to stop contrary to section 136(1)(a) HTA

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on Jan. 16, 2023.
