Arrest made at scene of Serpent River First Nation church break-in

SERPENT RIVER FIRST NATION - On Aug. 8, 2021 at approximately 10:30 a.m., members from the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a break and enter in progress at a local church in the community of Serpent River First Nation.

Investigation determined a side door to the church was forced open and a person was located in the building upon police arrival.

As a result, Russ Schmitz, 30 years of age from Walford, was charged with:
    •    break, enter a place - commit indictable offence, contrary to section 348(1)(b) of the Criminal Code
    •    fail to comply with probation order, contrary to section 733.1(1) of the CC (two counts)

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on Oct. 7, 2021.
