Apartment locks changed, suspect moves in while owner away: Police

BLIND RIVER - On Jan. 5, 2024 shortly before 5 p.m., members from the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a break and enter in progress at an apartment building on Woodward Avenue in the Town of Blind River.

Police attended and confirmed the suspect was gone upon their arrival. Investigation determined that while the owner was away the suspect broke into an apartment, changed the locks and took up residency. When the owner returned and gained access to the unit, the landlord observed some items that where now in the apartment and some items to be stolen.

On Jan. 6, 2024, the Greater Sudbury Police Service (GSPS) advised East Algoma OPP they arrested the suspect for the Blind River break and enter who was now in custody.  

East Algoma OPP travelled to GSPS and recovered the stolen property and as a result, Kody Ethier, 32 years of age from Blind River, was charged with:
    •    Break, enter a place - commit indictable offence

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on Feb. 1, 2024.
