Alberta man arrested, $3.7M in drugs seized near Massey

Police say they found 25 kg of suspected methamphetamine, 15 grams of suspected cocaine

An Alberta resident is facing multiple charges after police say they discovered drugs valued at $3.7 million while investigating reports of a damaged pickup truck near Massey.

The Manitoulin OPP say they seized more than 25 kg of illicit drugs after responding to reports of the pickup parked in a driveway on Highway 17, in Sables-Spanish Rivers Township, shortly after 7 p.m. on May 9.

The caller said they believed the driver was impaired, police say.

It is alleged that responding officers who searched the truck seized approximately 25 kg of suspected methamphetamine and 15.2 grams of suspected cocaine.

With aid from the Greater Sudbury Police Service Canine Unit, police say they also seized $3,400 in Canadian currency, a weigh scale, 39-mm rounds of ammunition, packaging materials and two cell phones.

Trenton Johnson, 35, from Chestermere, Alberta, was arrested and charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs  
  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • Possession of methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking
  • Possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000
  • Operate unsafe vehicle
  • Drive motor vehicle - no licence
  • Operate motor vehicle without insurance
  • Drive motor vehicle - no permit
  • Having care or control of a motor vehicle with an open container of liquor

The accused was held for bail and will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice Virtual Bail Court in Sudbury on May 10.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
