48-year-old faces impaired charges after smashing truck into multiple vehicles: OPP

On July 1, 2021, shortly after 11:45 p.m., members from the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a pick-up truck smashing into several parked cars at a residence on Willoughby Road in the City of Elliot Lake and later left the area driving towards Roman Avenue.   

On July 2, 2021 at approximately 12:01 a.m., the pick-up driver attended the Elliot Lake detachment where officers determined the driver had consumed alcohol and was arrested.   

As a result, Duane Newton, 48 years-of-age from Elliot Lake, was charged with: 

  • Dangerous operation, contrary to section 320.13(1) of the Criminal Code (CC) 
  • Operation while impaired-alcohol and drugs, contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the CC 
  • Operation while impaired-blood alcohol concentration (80 plus) contrary to section 320(1)(b) of the CC 
  • Mischief over $5000, contrary to section 430(3) of the CC (two counts) 
  • Mischief under $5000, contrary to section 430(4) of the CC (two counts) 
  • Failure to stop after accident, contrary to section 320.16(1) of the CC (three counts) 

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on Aug. 3, 2021.  

The accused was issued a 90-day Administration Driver's Licence Suspension and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
