33-year-old charged in Atikameksheng First Nation sexual assault investigation

ATIKAMEKSHENG FIRST NATION, - On June 10, 2020 at 5:15 p.m., members of the Atikameksheng First Nation Police began an investigation into an historical domestic violence and sexual assault incidents, which occurred in 2019 and 2020, in the community of Atikameksheng First Nation.

As a result of the investigation, with the assistance of members from the Nipissing West (Sudbury) Crime Unit of the Ontario Provincial Police, a 33-year-old person, from Atikameksheng First Nation, was arrested on the evening of June 11, 2020 and charged with:

  •  Assault - spousal (two counts), contrary to section 266 of the Criminal Code (CC);
  • Sexual assault, contrary to section 271 of the CC;
  • Assault with weapon - spousal, contrary to section 267(a) of the CC; and
  • Overcome resistance by attempting to choke, suffocate or strangle another person, contrary to section 246(a) of the CC.

The accused was released by way of an undertaking and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on Sept. 2, 2020, in Sudbury.
