February 24, 1918 – July 30, 2023
We are saddened to announce the peaceful passing of our mother at Golden Birches Terrace in her 106th year. She has been reunited with her beloved husband Archie, her parents Elizabeth and Alfred Shaw as well as her siblings Aubrey and Betty. Caring mother of Joanne Laine (late Mark), Tricia Howse (late Gordon) and Nancy Chambers (late Gord). Proud Gram of Kevin Laine, Karen Laine (Derikk), Allison Lawrence (Casey), Anita Doyle (Aidan) and Heather Stagg (Georges) and great gram of Tyler, Dylan, Randi, Kiia, Marcus and Ciara. Fondly remembered by nieces and nephews.
Joyce was a Registered Nurse, graduating from the Plummer Memorial Public Hospital School of Nursing in 1940. She left nursing to raise her family alongside her husband Archie who she met while nursing him back to health. Together they enjoyed dancing, curling, travelling and raising their girls during their 50 plus year marriage.
Joyce was very creative and during her senior years she decided to take up the organ, learn to paint and practice calligraphy. These were just a few of her many talents. The secret to her longevity was her adaptability, persistence and ability to live in the moment. She was engaged until the very end, chatting, making jokes and leaving us with beautiful memories…..for this we are grateful.
The family would like to thank Sheila Nyman for her friendship and all the staff at Golden Birches Terrace for their excellent care and compassion.
A private celebration of Joyce’s life will be held at a later date.
