It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Margaret McBurney (née Simmons) at age 86 on Sunday 30 April 2023 in Ottawa, Ontario, lovingly surrounded by her family.

Predeceased by her late husband Lee McBurney, Mary will be greatly missed by her husband of 23 years, Clement Charest, and her children Shawn (Jacqueline), Marta (Rob), and Charlene (Stan), her stepchildren Joanne (Jeff) and Monique (Erik), as well as her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her brother (Henry Simmons), sister (Cathy Simmons) and extended circle of friends.

Born and raised in Toronto, Mary moved to Elliot Lake during the 1960’s to work as a nurse at St. Joseph’s Hospital and then the Algoma Public Health Unit.  Throughout her life, but even more so after her well-earned retirement, Mary strongly believed in service to the community and volunteered at the Elliot Lake Food Bank, St. Joseph’s Hospital Auxiliary Gift Shop, St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Shop and with St. Bernadette's Church.

A 'Celebration of Life' will be held at a later date (July) in Elliot Lake, Ontario at St. Bernadette’s Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Mary’s name to the Elliot Lake Food Bank.

Funeral arrangements entrusted to the Elliot Lake Funeral Chapel & Cremation Centre (36 Ontario Ave). Online condolences to Mary’s family may be made at www.elliotlakefuneralchapel.com
