July 14, 1924 – July 11, 2023

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Clifford Walter Houghton, peacefully at the Sault Area Hospital on the morning of July 11th, 2023, four days before entering his 100th year.

Born in Bourkes, Ontario, Clifford always believed in making big statements, weighing-in at 12.8 pounds at birth. At age 4, he pointed to a picture of a greenhouse in a book his mother was reading and said, “I’m going to do that someday.” And he did - sitting at the helm of Manitou Gardens and Florist for over 25 years.

Clifford Served King and Country in World War II, in the RAF Bomber Command as a Handley Page Halifax bomber electrician. He was stationed on many bases in Northern England and was a member of Swordfish Squadron.

Clifford was the son of Arthur Houghton and Linda Mary Gibbs; the brother of Art Jr., Leonard, Donald, Mary, Margery (all deceased) and Evelyn. He leaves behind his daughter Cindy (Dan), nieces, nephews, his sister Evelyn, and his sister-in-law Carolyn Houghton. Clifford was predeceased by his son Wayne (1993) and his spouse of 53 years, Leona (2005).

Cremation has taken place, and his remains will be interred at the Carlyle Cemetery in Iron Bridge, Ontario at a later date, along with a celebration of life.

Many thanks to the teams at the North Shore Health Network and Sault Area Hospital. Special thanks to Dr. M. Shamas, and Doctors Khot and Fera. Kudos and thanks as well to the nursing team at Bayshore Homecare, and the CCAC.

Donations in Clifford’s memory can be made to a charity of your choice. Some of his favourite charities were: The North Shore Health Network, CNIB Guide Dogs, and The Heart and Stroke Fund.
