It is with great sorrow the De Sousa family announces the passing of Avelino on December 31, 2022 in his 92nd year. He was the husband to Deolinda for 63 years, father to Maria (Joe), Rose, Manuel (Bonnie) and John (Cila). He was a proud grandfather to David, Christina, Catharine, Nicholas , Brandon, Cameron, Thomas, Rui and great grandfather (GG) to Blake, Nicole, Dawson, Jillian, Lauren, Hudson and Abigail. Avelino is remembered by his sister Rita and brother Antonio as well as many nieces and nephews in Canada and Portugal.

Avelino was born in Portugal and he came to Canada in 1957 for a better life. He immigrated to the tobacco fields in Southern Ontario and when the mines opened up in Elliot Lake, he travelled up North for a job. He fell in love with the North since it reminded him of Portugal. Avelino managed to get a job at Denison Mines when he picked up one of the mine managers on the side of the highway who had a flat tire. He worked at Denison until the mines closed. He spent retirement travelling back and forth to Portugal for 6 months in both countries. Avelino had a strong work ethic, loved politics, big cars and building stuff in his garage. He was a proud and stern man that loved his homemade red wine. He died peacefully in his bed at home with his family nearby. Just like he wanted.

We would like to thank Dr Britton-Foster (Doctor and friend) who helped us during this time.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2023 at 10:00 am from Ste. Bernadette’s Parish in Elliot Lake with Father Eric Pannike officiating.

Interment to follow at a later date in Woodlands Cemetery, Elliot Lake.

Memorial donations to the St. Joseph’s Foundation of Elliot Lake would be appreciated by the family.

Arrangements entrusted to the Elliot Lake Funeral Chapel & Cremation Centre and expressions of sympathy to the family may be made at www.elliotlakefuneralchapel.com
