That's 54 more beds to sleep in at St. Joseph's General Hospital

Successful $324,000 campaign reaches target. Community support lauded

A $324,000 campaign to replace 54 beds at St. Joseph’s General Hospital in Elliot Lake is complete with all the replacement beds here and many already set up in rooms.

The campaign replaced beds that were over 20 years old with each bed costing about $6,000 each.

Hospital Foundation Chair William Elliott noted that once again Elliot Lake and the surrounding communities were quick to step up and help out. The campaign was launched in November 2020 and was immediately well received.

“Numerous organizations, businesses and individuals came forward to donate, many choosing to ‘buy a bed,’ or in some cases, several,” said Elliott.

In late March of this year, the Foundation received notice that Rogers Communications would be donating $25,000 to the campaign, which represented the final amount needed to complete the project.

“Our beds are the centre of everything we do with every single patient – from the birth of a new baby to the experience of a critical diagnosis,” Hospital CEO Jeremy Stevenson said.

“This vital equipment is used 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and the end of its lifecycle brings the opportunity for replacement with new technology and materials, which ultimately enhance the patient experience. We are thrilled that through the support of our Foundation’s campaign, our donors have enabled us to provide our patients with the latest technology that will significantly enhance their care.”

The Foundation Board, in conjunction with hospital administration, is currently reviewing potential projects for the next campaign, and information will be announced as soon as the Board has made a decision.
