Last week members of Elliot Lake's arts community got guided tours of the former Reel to Reel Cinema building downtown slated to become the new home for some of their members, later this year.

What isn't clear is just which arts community organizations will end up calling the renovated building their permanent home.

Reps for groups like the Arts Club, ELATE, Stage Four Players. Elliot Lake Quilters, model railroaders and others got the walk-around look at the inside of the former movie theatre with the city's Economic Development Manager Steve Antunes.

They also had a chance to make suggestions on the use of the space. The Arts and Culture Advisory Committee will meet on March 4 to hear some of their input.

All rooms in the renovated building will be suitable for multiple purposes. They'll either be rectangular or square and designed deliberately to be unspecialized.

Antunes told the council's virtual Monday night meeting the full cost of the old building's redo will clock in at about $1.1M.

In order to qualify for grant funding to pay for the renovations which are estimated at about $453,000, the work is supposed to be completed by the end of this year.

The idea is to give as many arts and culture organizations as possible a place to practice their crafts pending the eventual construction of the Elliot Lake Arts Hub.

It's still years away from construction on the site of the former Lester B. Pearson Community Centre on Highway 108.
