Curling returns to Elliot Lake

Brings pickleball with it

The Deer Trail Curling club will be opened under new management by the same group that operates the Elliot Lake Red Wings. Plans are in progress for curling to start this fall.

Membership packages will be designed to suit all curlers. Leagues for all ages and abilities along with curling orientation and workshops will be offered.

It’s anticipated the season will get underway in October, said Paul Noad a principal with the organization tentatively named Elliot Lake Granite, Sport and Social Club.

The group plans to utilize the space for pickleball in the off-season which will also be introduced this spring, according to Noad the facility can offer pickleball indoors without concerns about inclement weather conditions or insects outside. Pickleball is currently held at the tennis club.

“Based on the warm welcome and enthusiastic sporting community in Elliot Lake, we are thrilled to announce plans to bring back curling and broaden the sporting and social options in the community,” said Noad.

The organization purchased the facility after having it structurally inspected and confirmed solid. He declined to comment on the purchase price.

The group was announced in a deal with ELNOS in March.

“ELNOS understands the importance of recreational facilities to the overall health and wellness of our communities," ELNOS chairman Ian Ludgate said in the March statement. “The unique nature of ELNOS allowed us to secure the property and work with an experienced proponent who has exciting plans for the future.”

The group will take over operation and maintenance of the club, fundraising and provide people to work on events without having to rely on club members to volunteer.

The venues planned include a licensed lounge to provide a comfortable setting for members to socialize and watch curling, pickleball or other sporting events on TV. Noad said the club has already received its liquor licence. The building facilities will be available to rent by reservation for organizations or individuals for special occasions including dances, celebrations, parties and larger gatherings.

The lounge is undergoing renovations to make it comfortable for upper-floor events. Noad said the club is looking for people to operate the kitchen.

This venue also provides excellent opportunities for programming for high-performance athletic team training on and off the ice between seasons. Membership information will be available soon on the website or email [email protected] with any questions.

Stop by the Club at 55 Hillside Drive South to inquire about the upcoming season, purchase your curling membership or Red Wings season tickets for 2022-2023.

Noad said the Red Wings will host a prospect camp on May 6-8 in Elliot Lake.

“It’s starting to fill up but (we) have spots available.”
