Year in review: Two Elliot Lakers join centenarian club

Kris Svela picks two of his favourite stories from 2021

In my 38 years as a community reporter, four with Elliotlaketoday, I have had the opportunity to meet many different people and report on a wide range of topics. Each and every story I’ve done during that time has been community-based many involving local people and politics.

That is why I was honoured to meet and report on two Elliot Lake residents who turned 100 years of age this year. I’ve met two centenarians in all my reporting years, so it was special to meet two living in the same community. I was also equally fortunate to have met Louisa Taylor of Elliot Lake in June 2020 when she turned 100 years old.

In July, I spoke with Irene Stoliker when she turned 100 on July 21 at a come-and-go tea at her comfortable home on Frame Crescent and in November, I met Evelyn Reid who joined the centenarian club on Nov. 8.

Their birthdays were celebrated with family and friends because they coincided with a lessening of COVID restrictions.

Both are active and healthy, and I enjoyed speaking with them about their lives. It was great to meet them both and hear about their remarkable experiences over the past 100 years.
