Canada has just set a record for the number of forest fires in a single year. The Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre reported that 2023 is now officially the worst year on record for forest fires. 

As forest fires continue to burn in Quebec and northeastern Ontario, the air quality remains poor in many locations including Timmins, Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury and North Bay. Environment Canada has indicated improvements could happen tonight and into tomorrow.

Premier Doug Ford is facing blowback following comments he made regarding recipients of Ontario Works. Ford says “What drives me crazy is people on Ontario Works - probably three, 400,000 - that are healthy” The province has “never seen more jobs available”, Ford said.

The city of Toronto woke up to a new mayor-elect today as Olivia Chow defeated her nearest competitors Ana Bailao and Mark Saunders. Chow who garnered 37 percent of the vote vows to make Toronto safe, affordable, caring and a place where everyone belongs.

Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers cleaned up at the annual NHL Awards held in Nashville Monday night. Despite winning the Hart, Ted Lindsay, Rocket Richard, Art Ross trophies, the Oilers captain still has a Stanley Cup sized hole in his heart as hockey’s holy grail has still eluded the superstar.

Air quality continues to be an issue across northern Ontario with conditions still poor in many locations. Environment Canada is indicating there could be some improvement tonight into tomorrow. Wednesday looks like a pleasant day across most of the north.
