A band of heavy thunderstorms that blew through the Elliot Lake area late Wednesday afternoon led to the postponement of an online public meeting planned by the City of Elliot Lake.

The storm, which included heavy rain and strong winds left an estimated 6,000 homes and businesses in the dark.

Hydro One listed seven different power outages in the community of 11,500 after 6 p.m.

A number of people reported uprooted trees and property damage. There were no early injury reports.

Hydro One's estimated time for restoration of power was 8:30 p.m.

The meeting had been set for 6 p.m. via Zoom and would have accommodated up to 300 online participants if it gone ahead.

Shortly after it's originally scheduled start time, the city posted a notice on its website announcing the meeting had been postponed for a week.

It is now scheduled for 6 p.m. on Aug. 18.

There had been two public meetings scheduled to inform residents of possible options going forward in the construction of new recreation facilities in the city.

Public opinion will be collected and documented so that city staff and political.leaders will have it as a reference to make decisions on a choice between pre-fabricated and traditional construction methods for any new buildings.

A similar in person meeting is set for 6 p.m. Thursday night in Collins Hall. The meeting will host up to 150 participants in the indoor venue.

Participants were notified of their selection by email last week. Full masking and distancing protocols will be observed during the indoor session.
