The Elliot Lake Red Wings couldn’t rally enough to beat the Soo Thunderbirds Friday in the back end of a home-and-home series between the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League clubs.

The locals lost 4-2 on Friday on the heels of a 1-0 win in Sault Ste. Marie on Wednesday night that saw goaltender Cameron Smith register his third shutout of the season.

The Thunderbirds jumped out to a 2-0 lead through one period thanks to goals by Michael Chaffay and Jackson Truchan

Youssef Chaouachi extended the lead to 3-0 in the opening minute of the second period.

The Red Wings got on the scoreboard at 5:31 of the second on a goal by Charlie Wesholowski to narrow the gap.

Thunderbirds defenceman Austin Fellinger scored an empty net goal with 2:46 to go in the third period while Thomas Dimoulas scored on the power play 30 seconds later to cap off the scoring.

The Red Wings record stands at 8-9-0-0 with the loss.

The Red Wings meet up with neigbourly rivals the Blind River Beavers at the Centennial arena Saturday at 7 pm.
