Elliot Lake Red Wings forward Matthew Shulist had a three-point night as the Red Wings picked up a 6-2 Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League win over the Soo Thunderbirds at Centennial Arena Sunday afternoon.
Shulist drew first blood in the contest when he got the puck past Thunderbirds netminder Nolan Chartrand at 9:39 of the first stanza.
It was Chartrand's first appearance against Elliot Lake since he left the Red Wings and joined the Thunderbirds last week.
Shulist found the back of the net for the second time at 2:45 of second period.
Red Wings forward Alex Antoine followed along at 9:06 with a power play goal.
The Thunderbirds got on the scoreboard when Brock Santa Maria put a shot past Red Wings netminder Cameron Smith at 9:49 on the power play.
The Soo's Youssef Chaouachi got another one past Smith at 16:34, scoring his fourth goal of the season.
The third period made the difference for the Red Wings as they scoring three unanswered goals.
Kaden Laverdiere got the insurance marker for Elliot Lake at 6:14 , followed by a goal by Jace Simington-Lesanko at 10:18.
The icing went on the Red Wings' victory cake when captain Dayton Clarke scored his eighth goal of the season, assisted by Shulist, at 17:43.
Smith took the win for the Red Wings, stopping 17 of the 19 Thunderbirds shots he faced for Elliot Lake.
Chartrand was tagged for the loss for the Thunderbirds. He stopped 22 shots.
Laverdiere chipped in with a goal and an assist while Parker Banks assisted on a pair of goals for the Red Wings.
Other Sunday afternoon play saw the Hearst Lumberjacks get past the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners 5-4 in double overtime.
Next up for the Red Wings is a game next Friday night in Sault Ste. Marien against the Thunderbirds at 7:30 p.m.
