Blind River council is looking for a new operator for the Alain Bray movie theatre.

The popular movie venue that operated at the French high school has been closed since the start of the pandemic and was operated by Alex Solomon and family. Since his death in 2021 the family has “chosen not to renew their contract, leaving the theatre closed,” town CAO/Clerk Katie Scott said in a report to council.

Staff went out to tender, as directed by the Corporate Services Committee, in April of 2022 with no interest. Two further extensions for proposals were advertised, along with a social media push. Again, no proposals were received, due to lack of interest from the public in operating this service,” she noted.

Scott said efforts to find a new theatre operator and has been extended until July 30 with hopes of generating interest from the community.

The matter will be brought back to council at its Aug. 8 meeting for further direction to staff on the outcomes of this fourth call.
