STOP littering the Jewel in the Wilderness

Standing beside a STOP sign, the Coureurs de Bois Outdoors Club were on their annual highway clean up this week

Thirteen members of the Coureurs de Bois Outdoors Club went on a highway cleanup this week. It’s an annual event for the club. The club looks after a stretch of Highway 108 from the Airport Road to the Depot Lake Boat Launch.

Members picked up 20 bags of garbage including 118 beer cans. They plan to cash the beer cans in and buy candies for events like the Elliot Lake Child and Family Centre Halloween and Christmas parade.

This year, the club reports, “less trash than the previous year so hopefully people are wising up.”

Commenting about the spirit of volunteerism, club president, Dave Nesbitt said, “The hiking club right now has a lot of people that are happy to help out with things. The smallest team we’ve had for trail clearing was five people and we’ve had as many as 20.”

Club members appreciated the ‘road praise’ from passersby. Eva Orlowski Charsley commented on her Facebook post, “We certainly appreciated the honking horns by passersby. Well done!!”
