Society for Animals in Distress paints different fundraising picture (8 photos)

Locals enjoy a social paint night to help support SAD's fundraising for a new roof for the local animal shelter

The Society for Animals in Distress (SAD) held their third paint night on Oct. 1st at Jack Leggars’ to help raise funds for the local animal shelter.

The artist helping participants came from Paint Night Sudbury and travels from Elliot Lake to North BayThe total amount raised was $600 for the animal shelter.

The reasoning for the fundraiser was to help cover the costs of housing the animals. SAD Business Manager Evelina Szczepanowska said these types of events are new to the town and it was requested by the community to have a different sort of fundraiser.

"The reason we decided to do this type of fundraiser for SAD is because it is something that is new and interesting for the community of Elliot Lake," she said. "People are always saying that there is nothing to do in Elliot Lake so we are always trying to come up with new fun things to do. We successfully sold out and raised $600 for the animal shelter."

"All the animals who are with us waiting for their forever homes get vaccinated and flea and worm treated before going to their new families," she explained on how the money will be spent. "This money raised will go directly towards the veterinary expenses that are incurred through this process. We are lucky to work with Dr. Belanger who gives SAD a good discount to help with running costs but we are still a business and with that, comes more expenses."

Around 40 people were in attendance to learn new art skills and could keep their finished product.

Attendee Caiti Christakos said she enjoys these types of evenings because she gets to meet new people and let loose.

“I get to drink and paint as I work,” she said. “This is a good way to get out and have fun.”

With social media being an important factor in day-to-day lives, the event was posted on Facebook to get the word out for Paint Night and that is how Andrew Ault found the event.

“I thought it would be cool to try,” he said. “It supports such a great cause.”

The event saw artists paint a boat in the moonlight.

As for the success of the night, Szczepanowska said it was very successful and participants were able to come out of the shell and enjoy a night of art.

"It was an extremely successful night and everyone seemed to have a really good time," she expressed. "It was an opportunity for everyone to come out of their comfort zone and try something new like Paint Nite. The night is about socialization and creativity while raising money for a good cause and the organization/artist do an amazing job at making sure everyone is enjoying themselves."

"We are already planning for the next one happening soon."

SAD’s next fundraising event for the roof will be held on Nov. 18. It will be a comedy show put on by Raise the Woof.
