Soccer players, visitors and coaches will have bathroom facilities to use after the Elliot Lake Minor Soccer Association reached an agreement to place portable washrooms on nearby city property.

The soccer club has been able to use washrooms at the Elliot Lake pool in the past when games were played at the adjacent Elliot Lake Secondary School (ELSS) field.

However, delays in the work being done at the pool and forcing its closure with anticipated re-opening in the fall meant the association needed to provide alternative washroom facilities for those attending games.

The soccer club entered a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the city to allow the portable washroom facilities to be placed on city property.

Every summer, the Elliot Lake Minor Soccer Association (ELMSA) runs a league on the fields located behind the Ruben Yli-Juuti Centre and Elliot Lake Secondary School, recreation and culture department director Kari Kluke said in a report to council at its Monday evening regular meeting.

“In past years, ELMSA would coordinate with the City of Elliot Lake to utilize the washrooms at the Ruben Yli-Juuti Centre throughout the season as there are no other washrooms available for use on or near the property.

“Due to the Ruben Yli-Juuti Centre being closed this summer for renovations, Elliot Lake Minor Soccer Association has arranged to rent portable washroom unit(s) for their participants to use during the season. Elliot Lake Minor Soccer Association requires a location to leave the units during the season and has inquired about leaving the units on city property.”

The only financial impact from this MOU would be the cost of electricity over the season that is accumulated from having to plug the portable washroom units in.

Council approved the memorandum.
