The Elliot Lake Fire Department is advising residents who have been expressing concerns about smoke in the city that the smoke is from a fire near Massey and that there currently is no fire in Elliot Lake.

In a news release issued Tuesday evening on behalf of the city's fire chief, residents were also being advised to protect themselves from polluted air if their health is vulnerable.

"Current smoke conditions in the City are caused by Sudbury Fire 17 at Massey Tote Road," the city news release states. "There is no current active fire in Elliot Lake."

"Air quality may be compromised so please take appropriate precautions," the news release concludes.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry said Tuesday night that Sudbury 17 began June 4, is not yet under control and is 1,024 hectares in size.
