Severe thunderstorm warning issued for Sault Ste. Marie

The storm could produce winds gusting up to 90 km/h and nickle-sized hail

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Sault Ste. Marie, Elliot Lake and surrounding areas.

The storm is capable of producing strong wind gusts and nickle-sized hail.

The office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.

Severe thunderstorm warning in effect for:

  • Sault Ste. Marie - St. Joseph Island
  • Searchmont - Montreal River Harbour - Batchawana Bay

At 1:05 p.m. EDT, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing very strong wind gusts and up to nickel size hail.

This line of severe thunderstorms is located from 40 kilometres west of Pancake Bay Provincial Park to 40 kilometres west of Pointe des Chênes, moving east at 80 km/h.

Hazard: 90 km/h wind gusts and nickel size hail.

Locations impacted include:
Pancake Bay Provincial Park, Batchawana Bay, Batchawana Bay Provincial Park, Sand Bay, Red Rock, Horseshoe Bay, Allard Lake and Nettleton Lake.

Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!

The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.
