NEWS RELEASE
CITY OF ELLIOT LAKE
***************************
The city has recently launched a rotating surveillance techniques program combining efforts between the Public Works and Bylaw departments. These techniques were developed to identify individuals illegally disposing of their household waste throughout the surrounding environment and/or inappropriately using garbage bins that are specific to certain areas.

The program involves the rotation of cameras and other methods at all popular illegal dumping areas along with signage warning residents that they may be on camera. Recently, bylaw officers were able to mail notices and lay several charges to residents who were identified. Illegal dumping has been a problem for years, which negatively impacts the environment and adds the burden of costly clean-up to all the law abiding taxpayers.

The city will continue to operate and review the program regularly. Residents are reminded to dispose of household waste properly using curbside pickup every Tuesday or take advantage of the landfill which is open six days a week (closed on Sundays and holidays).

Lastly, the city has noticed a large number of masks improperly disposed of throughout city streets and parks since the Algoma Health Unit’s instructions to wear masks for all indoor spaces and transit. The city is asking all residents to please dispose of masks in your household waste or any municipal garbage cans located throughout the city.

Please do your part to keep Elliot Lake clean and beautiful!
