St. Joseph’s General Hospital Elliot Lake (SJGHEL) is advising the public that its treatment facility, the Camillus Centre, is in an Acute Respiratory Illness (ARI) outbreak that was declared Thursday by Algoma Public Health.

SJGHEL is strongly recommending that visitation be limited for essential or compassionate reasons only, according to a news release.

The hospital reminded the public that there are several things people can do to protect themselves and others against respiratory viruses:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based sanitizer.
  • Ensure full immunization including booster doses for those who are eligible.
  • Wear a mask in public spaces and change it frequently.
  • If you are not feeling well, stay home and rest or contact your primary health care provider.
  • Observe social distancing and respiratory etiquette.
  • Reduce indoor air pollution via adequate ventilation where possible.

For more information on respiratory viruses, contact Algoma Public Health at 705-942-4646 ext. 5404 or contact your family health care provider.

The hospital thanked the community for their "continued support and patience as we attempt to control this outbreak".

SJGHEL said it will inform the public how things progress and of the resolution as more information comes in.
